The database contains hundreds of objects discarded by our great great grandparents. You can explore items from the nursery, bottles and pots from the larder, crockery from the dresser and thousands of other remnants of a vanished material culture. Simply browse the images in a category and click on ones you like. Or search by clicking on the magnifying glass at the top right of the page and typing a particular term, such as doll, clay pipe, cup, lemonade, fish, or flowers. You can also search by location and by decade to see objects from one dig or objects from the 1890s, say. Every item in this unique collection was either discovered in a datable context or is itself datable.
Use the database for teaching or research. The text with each entry provides information on minutiae of daily life. Prop buyers take note: there can be no more excuses for furnishing Victorian sets with twentieth-century glassware!
Now sit back and immerse yourself in everyday Victoriana – the mundane stuff that was handled, broken and thrown away.
